Right to carry

A permit or license is required to carry a concealed handgun in Maryland. Open carry rules differ — check local restrictions.

How to obtain a permit

Minimum age: 21. Apply through the County sheriff or state police / state licensing agency. Expect fingerprints, a background check, and in most cases proof of training.

Non-resident permits: available.

Reciprocity

Does not honor out-of-state permits.

Castle doctrine & self-defense

Duty to retreat outside the home (castle doctrine at home).

Vehicle transport & crossing state lines

Under federal law (FOPA, 18 U.S.C. § 926A), you may transport a firearm through a state if it is unloaded and locked out of reach — e.g. in the trunk or a locked container — and lawful at origin and destination.

Maryland enforces this strictly. Do not stop overnight with a firearm unless you can lawfully possess it here.

Sleeping: hotels, camping & RVs

A hotel room or campsite is usually treated like a temporary residence, but carry rules for the surrounding property still apply. Keep firearms secured when you're away from the room.

Prohibited places

Common restrictions: schools, courthouses, federal buildings, secured airport areas, and businesses posting legally effective signs. This jurisdiction has an expanded sensitive-places list.
