Right to carry
Texas allows eligible adults (generally 18+) to carry concealed without a permit. A permit is still recommended for reciprocity in other states.
How to obtain a permit
Minimum age: 18. Apply through the County sheriff or state police / state licensing agency. Expect fingerprints, a background check, and in most cases proof of training.
Non-resident permits: generally not issued — check with the issuing agency.
Reciprocity
Honors all valid state carry permits.
Castle doctrine & self-defense
Stand your ground (by statute).
Vehicle transport & crossing state lines
Under federal law (FOPA, 18 U.S.C. § 926A), you may transport a firearm through a state if it is unloaded and locked out of reach — e.g. in the trunk or a locked container — and lawful at origin and destination.
Sleeping: hotels, camping & RVs
A hotel room or campsite is usually treated like a temporary residence, but carry rules for the surrounding property still apply. Keep firearms secured when you're away from the room.
Prohibited places
Common restrictions: schools, courthouses, federal buildings, secured airport areas, and businesses posting legally effective signs.
